The Athena Forum was set up in 2008 as a successor organisation
to the Athena Project which ran from 1999 to 2007. Its mission is to provide a strategic oversight of developments
that seek to, or have proven to, advance the career progression and
representation of women in science, technology, mathematics, and medicine
(STEMM) in UK higher education. The Forum explores gaps and challenges,
and identifies and commends national and international excellence in supporting women in science. It is the expert voice from within and for the science
community. Its members are nominated by the UK’s leading scientific
professional and learned societies.
The Forum is independent and is supported by the Royal Society. The other founding
organisations were the Royal Academy of Engineering, Royal Society of Chemistry, Institute of
Physics, and the Inter Academy Panel. The Academy of Medical Sciences, the Society of
Biology, and the London Mathematical Society are now also represented on the Forum

Universities and STEMM professional and learned societies are encouraged to publicise the guide, and are invited to use the bookmark design to advertise it ‘locally’ using their own logo and text on the obverse

ASSET 2010
The Athena Survey of Science Engineering and Technology closed at the end of February with over 7,000 respondents from 80 plus universities across the UK. Individual departments, faculties, and universities with 50 or more respondents, will receive their results in March/April. At the beginning of April a Guide to using the data will be available on the survey website. Later in April the timetable for publishing national results and topic reports will also be available at www.athenasurvey.org.uk
